Official “Topping Out” Ceremony Marks The Occasion

GREENVILLE, NC; ATLANTA, GA – April 25, 2001 – Simmond’s Healthcare, Inc., a leading provider of comprehensive consulting, design and construction solutions for the health care industry, today celebrated a milestone in the development of one of its latest projects: the new, state-of-the-art medical facility for Physician’s East, Pitt County’s largest medical group practice.
Officials from Simmonds and Physician’s East, together with Greenville community leaders, gathered at the construction site today to commemorate the “topping out” of the new, 105,000 square foot medical office complex located on 14.27 acres between Arlington and W.H. Smith Boulevards.

Steeped in tradition, the “topping out” ceremony is an ancient construction custom that was originally performed for the purpose of driving out evil spirits or appeasing the gods, assuring good fortune for those who one day would occupy the building. Traced back as early as 700 AD, the custom originally involved attaching a tree to the topmost beam in a building as a signal to begin the next phase of construction.

Simmonds Healthcare and Physician’s East today continued the topping out tradition by placing an evergreen tree and an American flag upon a steel beam and then carefully placing it in the topmost position of the building.
